Unity in the Gospel

Philippians 2:5-8

The description of Jesus’ nature and work in verses 6-11 are intended in the context to spur on unity.

Verses 5-8 shows the progression of the condescension of Jesus.

  • Start: Jesus existed in the form of God (v.6).
  • Step 1: Jesus did not consider equality with God as something to be grasped (v.6).
  • Step 2: Jesus emptied Himself (v.7).
  • Step 3: Jesus took on the form a servant, born in the likeness of men (v.7).
  • Step 4: Jesus humbled Himself to be obedient the point of death (v.8).
  • Step 5: Jesus died on the cross (v.8).

Jesus died as a substitute, not merely as an example or as a guiding principle.

Two Invitation Challenges:

  1. Worship the God of your salvation.
  2. Commit to be light in the darkness.
